Locally admired for their two-man brand of garage-rock racketing, Melbourne's The Mess Hall swung into further public appreciation with the release of their second album, Devil's Elbow, which took out the Australian Music Prize earlier this year. For their single release, 'Pulse,' Justin Kurzel's (brother of one half of the outfit) clip applies the chugging rhythm of the song to a slightly bizarre collection of beachfront actions. 'Pulse' staggers intriguingly between an almost creepy kind of formalism (featuring a creepy variety of jump-roping kids), and the kind of chaotic hand-held aesthetic that stays just this side of the DOP throwing the camera after the actors.
Graduating from the VCA in 2005, Kurzel's short film 'Blue Tongue' screened at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Melbourne International Film Festival that year. He joined Cherub Pictures (Sydney-based representation of a variety of local filmmaking wunderkinds, including Andrew Dominik and Nash Edgerton) upon his graduation, and less than two years later received major attention at the Cannes Lions in 2007, his WWF Earth Hour campaign winning a titanium, and British Council spots collecting a bronze award.
Pulse was recently named Best Music Video at the St Kilda Film Festival.
