Right from the initial bickering over eggs vs. egg whites, it is clear these two protagonists are each others antagonist. The title of Peter Harvey's Versus says it all in this fast talking short about two men who can't decide if they are the other's friend or foe.
Picturesquely shot in a diner letting through minimal rays of afternoon sunlight, Versus follows a competitive conversation between two pop culture junkies. All kinds of wise cracks and big calls are made as these two attempt to outwit each on the themes of cuisine, religion, animation and justice. Reminiscent of Pulp Fiction's opening scene where Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer debate the correct etiquette of the use of the term garson, Versus pits the Devil against God, Star Wars against Star Trek, salt against pepper, Snake Pliskin against Mad Max and ultimately cops against robbers. It is clear from the dialogue that director Peter Harvey grew up in a Generation X Household under the guidance of Tarantino and Kevin Smith.
As the two begin to peek through the shutters at their fate that is waiting outside we attain a greater understanding of their plight. Yet this has no bearing on their ongoing need to argue over both the most contrived and grandest questions even when they know they have little time remaining to question each other.
Versus is a fast-talking short celebrating difference of opinion. Competing ideologies clash when it comes to talking God, cartoons and basically anything that can be taken apart to win an argument. There is rarely a victor in these arguments, rather it is the process of dispute that is so celebrated here until the witty repartee between two buddies having brunch becomes much more than hypothetical banter.
