Synopsis
The city taxi drivers have followed a course on kindness. If you do not make the grade, you will not arrive at your destination. Through black and white and 35mm film, Telmo Esnal creates a taxi experience where choice is supreme and the drivers are not short of options.
The film opens with a man leaving his residence on the phone to his mother, easing her by letting her know he knows when to take his tablets. This turns out to be the most normal occurrence he experiences that day, as a taxi abruptly yet efficiently pulls up in front of him.
The man enters, greets and names his destination. The driver then asks his passenger if he wants "with chat or without." Slightly puzzled the man answers in the affirmative. The driver then casually asks if he wants "with or without insults" as he calmly takes the car around a corner. Increasingly puzzled the man asks for no insults. Maybe just a super-efficient driver the man's expression seems to assume.
However the more this 'conversation' goes on, the greater the choices for response become. As the driver makes another turn, the passenger receives another tablet-taking based phone call from his mother. 'Taxi?' does not seem to be the place to be if daily tablets are required.
At the end of a long list of topics, politics is chosen, with the follow-up option of whether it is parliamentarian, judicial or economic, which asks further if domestic or international is preferred. With his patient trying, the man regrets not choosing the 'insults' option. And so on, and so on.....
There is a circular theme of 'Taxi?', where corners and turned without really going anywhere, and questions are answered only to be answered again. Telmo Esnal's short is a humorous Road Movie that is more static than journey, yet light hearted and enjoyable all the same.
