first time i saw this
short film from Taleb was
in Rotterdam
international film
festival ,it was in my
opinion one of the best
short films screened
there.It is not only a
Moroccan story, but a
story that concerns us
here too.At least them
they can deal with being
bored by going to the
beach, take risks in
life, watch
tourists..ect, in my
opinion it is an active
reaction.., but we, we
sit beside computer
games, watch Tv, or
follow the rules...good
film.Marina Necsoi.
'Ziyara Kassira (aka Short Visit)' by Abdelaziz Taleb follows two boys in Morocco, who are restless and bored out of their brains. The ordinary day of walking the streets takes a troubling turn for the two youths in this short drama as after several hours lounging on the sand, the boys begin making their way home when fate steps in.
The eldest boy, Youssef introduces himself and his younger sidekick Amine, along with the objects and scenery that surrounds them. "Dish, roof, clothes, mosque - I don't understand the language of this place." So with the mundane day to day grind in the life of teenagers, the boys decide to take a day trip. They jump on and off buses, sit and look over the town from a viewpoint in silence and finally head to the beach. Taleb does not use much dialogue as the boys sit in silence passing the day away.
As the boys head home after a day of doing not a hell of a lot, they encounter a woman and their appetite for action leads them to an act, that could only be charged by typical teenage boredom and the need for something, anything to happen. Youssef captures this feeling as he narrates, "to be honest, I don't like it here."
'Short Visit' has been screened at the Berlinale Talent Campus, Sao Paolo International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Taleb successfully documents a short about the mission of filling in time when you're a teenager, and how sometimes causing trouble is not really the best medicine, but at least it's something to do.
