Synopsis
'Passage', co directed by Clarissa Campolina and Helvecio Martins jr. follows the footsteps of Liberio through Brazilian highways. This audiovisual diary recounts a journey made eight years ago. The questions and memories of the character are transformed through the passage of time, by the landscape and the experience of making the film.
Liberio abandoned his job and his house in the Northeast of Brazil, and walked for 6 months through Brazil's highways. The film follows this man through the same roads and cities that he passed 8 years before. The re-creation of this trip allows the short film to transit between fiction and documentary, being itself installed as register and perception of a poetical stream of images.
The film interweaves close shots, long and quiet shots, with fragments of the character's statement - his histories, his memories and doubts on the proper accomplishment of the film. This structure makes it possible for the spectator to approach the space where the character transits and to recognize that its incessant, multidirectional shift does not disclose a direction or goal. The film also does not desire to fulfill any task as to define the character or to conclude anything. Its openness enables a new experience, for the filmmakers and for Liberio, who allowed each other to make a film without a map in their hands.
Clarissa Campolina was born in Brazil and she graduated in Communication - radio, television and film - in 2000, at The Federal University of Minas Gerais. Since 2000 she is part and co-founder of the Brazilian audiovisual group called TEIA.
Helvecio Marins Jr was born in Brazil and he post graduated in Film - in 2002, at The Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Since 2000 he is part and co-founder of the Brazilian audiovisual group called TEIA.
'Passage' has won a series of accolades including Best Short, Best Photography and Best Editor at 39th Brazilian Film Festival - 2006, Best Experimental Short | Prize from ABD&C at 17th Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival - Curta Cinema - 2006, Best Short | Prize from Canal Brasil at Cine PE - Audiovisual Festival - 2007, Best Documentary Short at - Cineport - Cine Festival of Portuguese Speaking Countries - Brasil - 2007, Honorable Mention at - Curta-se, Brasil - 2007 and Best Short / Prize Cacha - Cine at Sao Paulo Internacional Film Festival - Brazil -2007
'Passage' is a poignant film where departure and travel is the goal, rather than reaching a destination. As Liberio makes his way through the Brazillian wilderness he philosophizes and ponders his existence among a varying backdrop that roars, hushes, burns and ripples. This combined effort by Campolina and Martins is as crafty in its visual composition, as it is in its wealth of rhetorical substance.
