"Hey, it's me. So, I'm leaving LA tomorrow... I'll pick you up in New Mexico by Tuesday... We have to be in New York by Saturday so... I'll see you soon!"
The music video for French band Lacquer's single, 'Behind,', is essentially two guys careening across America in a vintage Chrysler convertible - a 1966 Chrysler 300 to be exact. The entire seven-day journey, shot at one frame per second of driving (one frame per 10 seconds at night) is compressed into less than four minutes in some pretty severe 16mm time lapse...
The clip manages to go for both the epic sweep and mundane minutiae of a cross country road trip: we get to see each night's motel stay, and stops for map-checks and car washes. We also get to see the dramatic, slow beauty of the weather, and the variety of American landscapes: skyscrapers, towering bluffs, limitless sky, and unending freeway.
Behind arrives as an updated concept of a Lars von Trier clip, made by the lovably nutty Dane in the early 90s for the sleazily titled 'Highway of Love' for the similarly yacht-rock monikered band, Laid Back, which features a high-speedin road trip to San Francisco.
Twist, more commonly known as Oliver Gondry, is Michel's older brother. Before directing videos himself, he started out in visual effects, mostly writing proprietary effects software for his younger brother's various projects. He began working with Michel in 1996, and has added his own fractured brand of genius to a long list of works, including projects for Daft Punk, Bjork, BMW, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, the White Stripes, Fox Sports Network, and, um, Kylie Minogue. Michel Gondry is best known for films such as Human Nature and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
